Solar Design Tools is an applied research project at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) exploring how photovoltaic panels can be visually integrated into their architectural surroundings. By investigating coloured ceramic printing on solar panel glass, the project aims to make solar installations more aesthetically adaptable while maintaining energy efficiency and reducing the time and cost involved in design development.
I developed a custom desktop design application using Node.js, Vite and Electron to streamline the creation and iteration of solar panel designs. The tool allows designers to generate irregular visual patterns using predefined colour palettes and panel dimensions, then export production-ready files for direct use in industrial printing. Working closely with the design team, I gathered feedback, discussed requirements and implemented feature requests in an iterative development process, translating their design needs into a practical tool for rapid experimentation and production.
